Two Ways to Use a Skill

Option A: Upload to a Conversation

The fastest way to try any skill. Upload it once, use it in that conversation.

  1. Open claude.ai and start a new conversation
  2. Click the attachment icon (paperclip) and upload the .md skill file
  3. Type your request — for example: "Run the Proposal Builder. Here are my discovery call notes:" — and paste your inputs
  4. Claude produces the deliverable. Review, adjust, use

The skill is active for that conversation only. When you start a new conversation, you'd upload it again.

Best for: Trying a skill for the first time. Using a skill you only need occasionally.

Option B: Install in Custom Instructions

Make a skill persistent — built into every new conversation automatically.

  1. Open claude.ai
  2. Click your name or profile icon (bottom-left)
  3. Select Customize Claude (sometimes called Custom Instructions or Settings)
  4. Upload or paste the contents of the .md skill file into the instructions field
  5. Save

That's it. The skill is now built into every new conversation. You don't need to upload it again — Claude already has the instructions. Just start a new conversation and provide your inputs.
